TechDash vs changedetection.io

TechDash publishes this comparison. Details checked on 2 September 2026.

TechDash and changedetection.io can both alert you when a web page changes, but they approach the job from different directions.

TechDash packages monitoring around SEO conditions such as indexability, canonical tags, robots directives, schema and content. It runs as a desktop application. changedetection.io is a general-purpose, open-source change detector that can be self-hosted or purchased as a hosted service. It offers flexible filters, browser steps and a wide notification ecosystem.

Choose TechDash when you want SEO rules and an incident workflow without maintaining a server. Choose changedetection.io when you want open-source control, self-hosting or programmable page filters. A larger team that needs a managed, multi-user workspace should assess the collaboration model of both products before choosing either.

TechDash publishes this comparison. We used public vendor documentation and have included limitations on both sides. Details were checked on 2 September 2026 and may change.

The central difference: interpretation or control

Suppose a page's canonical changes from its own URL to a staging domain.

TechDash is designed to classify that as an SEO incident, preserve evidence and route it through an incident workflow. The user starts with the meaning of the change.

changedetection.io can also detect the altered canonical if the watch and filter are configured to target it. The user starts with a flexible change-detection system and defines what should be watched. That model can cover many non-SEO jobs, but it may require more initial configuration.

The same distinction applies to a noindex directive, schema property or selected text. A packaged SEO rule can reduce interpretation work. A general selector can provide more control over unusual pages and data.

Setup and day-to-day operation

TechDash

TechDash is installed on one supported macOS, Windows or Ubuntu computer. The application can run in the background and start at sign-in. Schedules include 15-minute, hourly, daily and weekly checks.

There is no hosted TechDash runtime that continues independently when the licensed computer is unavailable. The documented minimum is 8 GB RAM and 2 GB free disk space. A larger monitoring set may require more resources and a considered schedule.

changedetection.io hosted

The hosted service removes server deployment and most infrastructure work. Its current public offer is $8.99 per month and advertises up to 5,000 URL watches, browser steps, notification options and short recheck intervals. Confirm actual allowances and service terms on the official site before purchase.

changedetection.io self-hosted

The open-source project can be deployed using Docker or Python. That gives technical teams control over infrastructure and data flow. It also creates work that is absent from the software licence line: patching, backups, monitoring, browser resources, security and recovery.

Browser steps and JavaScript-heavy pages need more resources than simple requests. The project documentation notes Playwright-related requirements for browser operation. Teams should test a representative workload before estimating server size.

Selectors, browser steps and unusual pages

changedetection.io is stronger when the requirement is a specific CSS or XPath selection, JSONPath or jq processing, or a sequence of browser steps. It can be adapted to data feeds and page structures outside conventional SEO checks.

TechDash supports custom checks, including choices around headers, title, H1, visible content and page scope. Its emphasis remains SEO and website-health monitoring rather than broad browser automation. If a workflow needs login steps, clicks or arbitrary page interactions, verify the exact capability rather than assuming an SEO custom check provides it.

Alerts and evidence

TechDash presents incidents with status, severity and before-and-after evidence. It can send notifications through Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord and the desktop.

changedetection.io supports a large set of notifications through Apprise, as well as API access. This can suit teams that already have an alert pipeline. The quality of the alert still depends on the watch, filter and notification template configured by the user.

Neither product's alert count should be treated as a measure of success. A smaller number of actionable alerts is generally more useful than a stream of harmless page differences.

Privacy, reliability and maintenance

Both products can keep page checking away from a general SaaS crawler, but the responsibilities differ.

TechDash runs on the licensed computer. The user manages that computer, application availability and local data. The application itself is commercial and closed source.

A self-hosted changedetection.io deployment gives the user more control over hosting and configuration. It does not guarantee privacy by itself. Logs, backups, proxies, notification services and any external AI model can still move data outside the main server. Review the full path taken by credentials and monitored content.

The hosted changedetection.io service offers convenience, but data is processed by the vendor's service. Review its current privacy and retention terms for sensitive pages.

Price and total cost

Taxes and future price changes are excluded from these examples.

Hosted comparison

At the time of checking, changedetection.io hosted cost $8.99 per month:

  • One year: $107.88
  • Three years: $323.64

TechDash is priced at $179 or £129 one-off, for one computer and 12 months of updates and support. The installed version continues to work after that period. Optional renewal is not included because a renewal price was not supplied for this comparison.

The dollar figures place TechDash's one-off purchase below one year of the hosted subscription at the cited rates. That does not settle the decision. The hosted service runs away from the buyer's computer and solves a broader change-detection job. TechDash supplies SEO-specific rules and relies on local resources.

Self-hosted comparison

The changedetection.io software licence may be $0, but a fair total is:

infrastructure + backups + uptime monitoring + browser resources + administrator hours + optional proxy or model costs

If administration takes two hours per month, multiply 24 annual hours by the team's loaded hourly rate before calling self-hosting cheaper. A team with existing infrastructure may have a low incremental cost. A non-technical buyer may not.

Limitations to consider

TechDash limitations

  • One-computer licence and local runtime
  • No open-source codebase or self-hosted web dashboard
  • Practical volume depends on hardware even though the licence does not cap pages
  • Not intended as a general browser-automation or arbitrary data-feed tool

changedetection.io limitations

  • Generic watches may need configuration before they express SEO meaning
  • Self-hosting transfers maintenance and reliability to the buyer
  • Browser steps consume more resources and add more failure points
  • AI summaries or rules may require local or external model configuration

A useful trial setup

Test both products against the same small set of changes before moving a client portfolio. Include a changed canonical, a noindex directive, selected visible text, a JavaScript-rendered value and a temporary server failure. Record configuration time, detection delay, evidence, false positives and recovery behaviour.

For changedetection.io, run the test with the exact deployment you intend to keep. A simple hosted watch, a self-hosted HTTP fetch and a Playwright browser step have different resource and maintenance profiles. For TechDash, run the test on the computer and schedule intended for normal use. This gives a more useful capacity signal than licence wording alone.

Which should you choose?

Choose TechDash if most of the following are true:

  • You need canonical, indexability, robots, schema and related SEO checks.
  • An incident-oriented workflow is preferable to building filters.
  • A nominated computer can run the workload.
  • A one-off commercial licence fits your buying preference.

Choose changedetection.io if most of the following are true:

  • You want open-source or self-hosted software.
  • You need CSS, XPath, JSONPath, jq or browser-step flexibility.
  • Your changes extend well beyond SEO.
  • Your team can maintain the deployment, or you prefer its hosted service.

Consider a different product if several users need a managed cloud workspace with client permissions and little technical administration.

Frequently asked questions

Is changedetection.io free?

The self-hosted software is open source, but hosting and administration are not free. A paid hosted service is also available.

Does changedetection.io need Playwright?

Simple fetch-based watches may not. Browser steps and some JavaScript-rendered pages require an appropriate browser service, commonly using Playwright. Check the current deployment documentation.

Can either product monitor unlimited pages?

TechDash does not impose a licence-level page limit, but the local computer sets a practical capacity. changedetection.io hosted advertises plan allowances, while a self-hosted deployment is limited by infrastructure and configuration.

Does self-hosting keep all data private?

Not automatically. Notifications, proxies, backups, analytics and external AI models may send information elsewhere. Review the complete deployment.

Next step

If you prefer predefined SEO incidents without server upkeep, review TechDash's checks and system requirements. If control over hosting and filters matters more, read the changedetection.io repository documentation before deciding.
