Download, restart, and install an update

Install an owned TechDash update in the app or with the browser installer.

Last checked 21 August 2026

TechDash offers two installation routes. Packaged macOS and Windows apps can download an in-app update. Download installer opens a platform installer in your browser and is the only route on Linux.

Neither route installs a release merely because TechDash checked for it. For an in-app update, installation begins only after you select Restart and install.

Apply an in-app update

  1. Open Settings > Check for Updates.
  2. Review Current version, Latest published, Newest installer you own if shown, and any release notes.
  3. Let the background download finish. The card may show a percentage and says when the update is ready.
  4. Wait until Restart and install appears.
  5. Select Restart and install.

The expected result is that TechDash closes, the platform updater applies the package, and TechDash reopens. Return to Settings > Check for Updates and confirm that Current version shows the installed release.

Keep the computer online during the download. If it fails, the card can return to the available state and retry later.

Quitting TechDash through its normal controls is not the same as selecting Restart and install. A downloaded update is applied only through the explicit update action.

Use Download installer

Use Download installer when you prefer the normal platform process, when no in-app apply file is published, or when you use Linux.

  1. Open Settings > Check for Updates.
  2. Select Check for updates if the current result is stale or unclear.
  3. Select Download installer.
  4. Wait for your browser to open the freshly authorized download.
  5. Install the file using the normal process for your operating system.

TechDash checks again before opening a short-lived download link:

  • macOS: The browser file is a DMG. Open it from Downloads, copy TechDash to Applications, wait for the copy to finish, eject the installer volume, and open TechDash from Applications.
  • Windows: The browser file is the TechDash setup executable. Open it from Downloads, complete the Windows installer prompts, then open TechDash from the desktop shortcut or Start menu.
  • Linux: TechDash offers a .deb or .rpm selected for the detected distribution type and computer architecture. Open it with your distribution's normal software installer and approve installation if your computer asks. TechDash does not run the package or apply Linux updates in-app.

If the browser does not download the installer

  1. Check the browser's downloads list for a blocked, cancelled, or incomplete item.
  2. Allow downloads to a folder your user account can write to.
  3. Check that the computer has enough free disk space.
  4. Check whether the browser blocked the external link or automatic download.
  5. On a managed computer, ask whether browser, antivirus, endpoint-security, or organisation policy blocked the file.
  6. Return to Settings > Check for Updates and select Download installer again.

Do not copy, bookmark, or share the installer URL. It expires after a short period. Always request a fresh link from TechDash.

If the operating system blocks installation

Verify that the filename and download source are the official TechDash update you expected. Do not bypass a warning for an unknown or unexpected file.

  • macOS: If the DMG or app is blocked, record the exact macOS warning, macOS version, Mac architecture, and filename. Make sure you are opening the copy in Applications, not running it from the mounted DMG.
  • Windows: If setup is blocked, record the exact Windows or security warning. Your Windows account or organisation may require administrator approval to install apps.
  • Linux: Use the package type TechDash offered. Do not rename or convert the package. If the software installer requests administrator approval, use the normal approval process for your distribution.

If Restart and install is missing

Restart and install appears only after the complete in-app file is ready. It will be absent if:

  • the download is still in progress;
  • the in-app file was not published for the release;
  • TechDash is running on Linux;
  • the current copy is an unpackaged development build;
  • the download failed or its offer could not be verified.

Use Download installer when shown, or select Check for updates again later.

If installation does not finish

Reopen TechDash and check Current version. If it still shows the earlier version:

  1. Return to Settings > Check for Updates.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Use Download installer as the fallback when it is available.
  4. Run the installer to completion using the platform steps above.
  5. Reopen TechDash and check Current version again.

If TechDash shows a newer owned version but no installation action, a matching platform file may not be published yet.

For more help, open Help & Support and use the support options available there. Include the current and expected versions, operating system, processor architecture, installer filename, and exact warning. Do not include the full license key or a short-lived installer URL.
