Rename a website in TechDash

Override the display name shown throughout the local portfolio.

Use Website name to change the label TechDash shows for a website without changing where monitoring runs. This is useful for client names, project names, regional labels, or distinguishing similar hostnames.

Change the name

  1. Open Websites.
  2. Open the website card's context menu.
  3. Select Edit Website.
  4. In the Edit website dialog, enter the new Website name.
  5. Select Save changes.

TechDash confirms that the hostname was updated, then closes the dialog. The new name appears on the website card, the website overview, and other places that identify the website. The technical hostname remains visible separately.

Automatic and custom names

When you add a website, there is no Website name field. TechDash initially uses the hostname, then homepage enrichment can choose a name from structured data, page metadata, or the page title.

Once you save a custom name, later screenshot refreshes do not replace it because it no longer matches the hostname-based automatic name. This lets you refresh the homepage image without losing your portfolio label.

To return to the hostname label:

  1. Open Edit Website again.
  2. Clear Website name.
  3. Select Save changes.

An empty name is saved as the current hostname. A name can be up to 128 characters; TechDash shows an inline error if it is longer.

Do not change the Website field just to rename

Renaming does not change:

  • The website origin or hostname
  • Monitored page URLs
  • The website or page check schedules
  • HTTP Basic Authentication or user-agent settings
  • Search Console property
  • Local screenshot or icon
  • Existing incidents and history

The Website field in the same dialog controls the actual address. Editing that field can change the hostname and origin used by all pages, trigger new homepage enrichment, and reset website lookups. Leave Website unchanged when you only want a clearer label.

The Check frequency field also affects more than the name. Changing it in Edit website updates every monitored page on that website.

Find a renamed website

Portfolio search checks both the display name and hostname. After naming a site Client Store, for example, you can find it with client, store, or part of its hostname.

If the card still shows the old label:

  • Confirm that you selected Save changes, not Cancel or the close button.
  • Reopen Edit Website and verify the saved value.
  • Check that you edited the intended card when similar hostnames are present.
  • If the value was cleared, remember that the expected result is the hostname, not the previous automatic metadata name.

Verify the rename

After saving, check the website card for the new display name and the unchanged hostname beneath it. Open the card and confirm that the website overview uses the same new name. Return to Websites, search for part of the new name, then search for part of the hostname. Both searches should locate the same website.

The confirmation message uses the hostname, even when you changed only Website name. This is expected and does not mean TechDash ignored the new label. The hostname is the stable technical identifier, while the name is the portfolio label.

Names are saved without leading or trailing spaces. If the name is over 128 characters, shorten it before saving. If a shorter valid name appears immediately but returns to the old value after you fully quit and reopen TechDash, open Help & Support. Include the hostname, the name you entered, and whether the new name appeared before restart. Do not include Basic Authentication credentials from Advanced Settings.
