Replace the license used by TechDash

Activate a different license on the current TechDash installation without deleting local data.

Last checked 20 August 2026

Use Replace license to activate a different email and key on the current computer without first returning to the locked activation screen.

This action changes which license the installation uses. It does not automatically release the previous license's server binding. Decide whether you need the old license elsewhere before replacing it.

Replace the license

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Find the License card.
  3. Select Replace license.
  4. In Replace License, enter the new license email and key.
  5. Select Save license.
  6. Wait for the dialog to close and confirm that Email and Updates and support show the replacement license.

TechDash validates the new credentials and sends an explicit binding request for the replacement key. If successful, it overwrites the locally saved license record and updates the License card. The replacement key must be unbound or already bound to this installation's device identifier.

Before replacing

Choose the correct sequence:

  • If the old key should remain assigned to this computer in your account, use Replace license directly.
  • If you want to use the old key on another computer, first select Unlink license from this device and confirm Unlink license. After TechDash returns to Activate TechDash, activate the intended key.
  • If you already replaced the license without unlinking the old key, release the old binding at https://techdash.com/account.
  • If the replacement key is bound elsewhere, unlink it on that computer or use Revoke this device for that license before continuing.

Replacing the local record is not a license swap at the server. Each key keeps its own binding and entitlement.

What stays on the computer

Replacing the license does not recreate the local TechDash database. Existing websites, monitored pages, checks, incidents, settings, HTML files, screenshots, and other local content remain on this installation.

Monitoring continues under the replacement license after activation succeeds. The Updates and support date changes to the date returned for that license. The Check for Updates card then calculates release ownership using the replacement license.

The sealed license key stored locally is overwritten. TechDash displays the licensed email but does not expose the saved key in Settings.

If replacement fails

The existing local license remains in use unless the replacement activation succeeds. Use the message in Replace License:

  • Enter a valid email address. Use the email associated with the replacement key.
  • Enter a license key like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Enter all 20 letters or numbers.
  • That email and license key were not accepted. Confirm the pair against the purchase details.
  • This license is already in use on another computer. Release the replacement key's existing binding first.
  • This license was revoked. Manage the license in its TechDash account before activating it.
  • Could not reach the license server. Restore a stable connection and retry later.

Because failed replacement leaves the current local record unchanged, do not unlink the existing license merely to troubleshoot a temporary server problem unless you intend to release it.

If the old key still says in use

This is expected if you used Replace license without unlinking first. Replacing does not send an unbind request for the old key. Open https://techdash.com/account, locate the old license and device, and use Revoke this device. You can then activate that old key on another computer.
