Understand the one-computer license limit
Understand how one TechDash license is bound to one installation at a time.
Last checked 21 August 2026
A TechDash license can be active on one computer at a time. It is not permanently tied to the first computer you use. You can release it from one installation and activate the same license email and key on another.
Selecting Activate license on Activate TechDash, or Save license when replacing a license, asks TechDash to assign that license to the current installation. It does not automatically remove an assignment from another computer.
What the limit means
The license service records which TechDash installation currently holds the license. If you try to activate the same key elsewhere before releasing it, the new installation shows:
This license is already in use on another computer. Unlink it there, or revoke it at techdash.com/account, then activate it here.
This can also happen after reinstalling the operating system or creating a fresh TechDash installation on the same physical computer. The new installation may be treated as a different computer. Release the earlier assignment before activating again.
Uninstalling TechDash does not release the license. Release it first whenever possible.
Release the license from the current computer
When you can still open the licensed computer:
- Open Settings.
- Find the License card.
- Select Unlink license from this device.
- In Unlink License, select Unlink license.
- Wait for Activate TechDash to appear.
The expected result is that the old installation locks and the license becomes available for activation elsewhere. If TechDash says it cannot unlink the license, check the internet connection and retry. The old installation keeps its license if the release request does not complete.
Release the license remotely
If the computer is lost, damaged, or unavailable, open techdash.com/account. Sign in to the account associated with the license, locate the affected license and device, and complete the available action to revoke or release that device.
The account website is maintained separately from the desktop repository, so its navigation and control labels can change. The result you need is a license with no device assigned. If you cannot find or complete that action, open Help & Support and use the support options available there. Include the licensed email, but do not send the full license key in an unsecured message.
After release, install TechDash on the destination computer. On Activate TechDash, enter the same Email and License key, then select Activate license.
What happens to the old installation
TechDash periodically validates an active license while the computer is online. After a remote release or a move, the old installation locks when it receives the changed license state. Monitoring and queued work stop there.
A computer that remains offline cannot receive the change immediately. This delay does not create a second valid activation. The one-computer limit still applies.
Temporary connection or service failures are different from a confirmed release. An already validated installation does not lock solely because a routine validation cannot reach the service.
Your data does not move
Moving the license transfers activation rights only. TechDash does not copy the old computer's:
- websites and monitored pages;
- crawl history, incidents, stored HTML, or screenshots;
- app, notification, webhook, and custom-check settings;
- Google Search Console connection.
The old files are not remotely deleted. The new installation starts with its own local data, so set up the websites and integrations it needs.
The updates date is separate
The one-computer limit does not mean the license expires after 12 months. The license itself does not expire. When the updates and support period ends, TechDash keeps monitoring on its licensed computer and previously owned installers remain available. Releases published later require renewal.
You can still release and move the license after the updates period ends. On the new computer, TechDash offers only a newer owned installer that matches that computer. It does not offer a downgrade.
